Monkey Beach, Ko Phi Phi, Thialand

You just know, when you hear about a tourist attraction like ” Monkey Beach”, that it is going to be a huge disappointment. I have had plenty of experiences with various monkey ”sites” in South East Asia, and usually they are not pleasant. This one does not disappoint to disappoint!
Troupes of Long Tailed Macaques congregate on the beach on a quite side of Ko Phi Phi Don, awaiting longboat loads of tourists setting foot on the beach, armed with fruit. As with Macaques everywhere, they are there for food, and will go to fair lengths to get their share. In particular, when one monkey is getting food, the others get more and more agitated until they get their share (or more).
In general, it degenerates into an aggressive scramble to get to the tourist with the bunch of bananas and other fruit. The bigger the Monkey, the more aggressive they tend to be. The more food to be had, the more of a circus it becomes!
I have been to a couple of interactions with Asian Monkeys that have been pleasant experiences, but it has only ever been when I, and others around are NOT feeding them!
My tip - Give Monkey Beach a big miss. Go snorkeling instead!
