Bali like it used to be?

October 12th, 2009

I have been visiting Bali since the early 1980’s, and like everyone else, I am often flabbergasted as to how much it has changed in that time. Not that I am saying I dont like Bali anymore, because I do, but there is no doubt that it has changed significantly also! And, as I have a reputation as a traveller who like to visit places a little “off the beaten track”, often people assume I hate Bali, or long for the good old days!

I do find I dont like to stay in Kuta too long, although I always spend a day or two there (where else can you buy DVD’s for 50c?). However, I do believe a lot of the rest of Bali, possibly with the exception of the Southern beaches of Kuta (and extended areas!), Sanur and Nusa Dua, is still generally charming, and not as spoilt by the rampant capitalism of the South.

I find even reasonably well know areas such as Lovina, on the North Coast, to be very laid back and friendly, as well as a few “gems” like Amed, and the towns around Ubud. Another very unspoilt area is the towns on Lake Batar. Also, Nusa Lembongan, off Sanur is unspoilt, as are some islands off the north coast.

My advise, Don’t write off Bali, it is still a paradise. However, you do have to look for it!
